How ANS is Advancing Nuclear Science and Technology and How You Can Help


Dr. Arndt will discuss the opportunities presented by the new reactor designs that cut across technologies, sizes, and target applications. He will discuss how ANS is supporting the advancement of the current effort to move the industry forward as well as some of the challenges associated with the development, licensing, and deployment of new reactors and how the community can help.


Don Eggett - ANS Standards Board Chair


An acknowledged leader within the nuclear industry integrating management, business, operational, and strategic skills in support of implementing industry strategies for improving the current operating fleet and advanced reactors initiatives.

Formerly employed by Exelon/Commonwealth Edison, Automated Engineering Services Corp (AES), and Amec Foster Wheeler (FW), having retired from the latter as an executive in March 2016. Currently, he is Owner and President of Eggett Consulting LLC providing consulting to the industry in operations, regulatory/licensing, and industry policy and is the current Chair of the ANS Standards Board.Prior to TC Energy she worked at EnergySolutions, an Energy Capital Partners portfolio company, where she was the Vice-President for Nuclear Decommissioning. Juliann has 15 years of nuclear and fossil industry experience in acquisition of commercial nuclear facilities, engineering, procurement, and construction of energy related projects.

As Chair, he answers directly to the President of ANS.she was the Vice-President for Nuclear Decommissioning. Juliann has 15 years of nuclear and fossil industry experience in acquisition of commercial nuclear facilities, engineering, procurement, and construction of energy related projects.


Dr. Andrew Sowder - ANS Standards Board Vice Chair


Andrew Sowder is a Senior Technical Executive at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), is a Certified Health Physicist, and serves as vice-chair of the American Nuclear Society Standards Board.

He provides strategic support for the Advanced Nuclear Technology program and Nuclear Sector, including government project development and expansion into fusion energy technology. 

Andrew established EPRI’s advanced reactor strategic focus area and previously managed applied research on advanced nuclear fuel cycles and used nuclear fuel management.

Prior to joining EPRI, he served as a physical scientist and foreign affairs officer at the U.S. Department of State and as a AAAS science and technology policy fellow at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.


November 2022 ANS MS Local Section Meeting


Ms. Juliann Edwards will be speaking to us on her work with SMRs on November 10, 2022. She is currently Vice President of Energy Origination and Development at TC Energy and in Q1 2023 will formally join the Board of Directors at Bruce Power.

Prior to TC Energy she worked at EnergySolutions, an Energy Capital Partners portfolio company, where she was the Vice-President for Nuclear Decommissioning. Mr. Frederick Sock Shares Overview of the NRC Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research Division

Join us for a presentation describing the work of the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research Division.

Frederick (Fred) Sock, P.E. has more than forty-two years of professional experience, with thirty-nine of those years in the design, fabrication, and installation of nuclear power plant structures. The last seven years have been with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, in the Office Nuclear Regulatory Research in the Washington, DC area.

As noted on the NRC website, some of the work of this division is that it:

“Maintains technical capability to develop information for resolution of nuclear safety and security issues, and provides technical support and consultation to the program offices in the related specialized disciplines. Provides independent analysis of operational data and assessment of operational experience through the review, analysis, and evaluation of the safety performance of facilities licensed by the NRC.”

Attorney Thomas C. Poindexter will introduce us to the world of nuclear law!

Attorney Thomas C. Poindexter represents nuclear energy clients in licensing, regulatory, and adjudicatory matters before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the US Department of Energy (DOE). Trained as a nuclear engineer, he has served on several nuclear oversight committees for US utilities with nuclear power facilities, and currently assists nuclear power plants and material licensees in recovering from regulatory, investigation, and enforcement problems. Atty. Poindexter also focuses on emergent issue response, facility performance situations, and regulatory strategic planning.
